At the How To Take Back America Conference last weekend, conservative speaker Kitty Werthmann led a workshop called “How to recognize living under Nazis & Communists.” Announcing the panel in a column preceding the conference, talk show host Janet Porter gushed how Werthmann’s description of Austria in the 1930s is a “mirror to America” today — noting “They had Joseph Goebbels; we have Mark Lloyd, the diversity czar.” The room was packed over capacity to hear Werthmann, who grew up as a Christian in Austria and serves as Phyllis Schlafly’s Eagle Forum South Dakota President.
During her session, Werthmann went through a litany of examples of how President Obama is like Adolf Hitler. She noted that Hitler, who acted “like an American politician,” was “elected in a 100% Christian nation.” Although she failed to once mention Antisemitism or militarism, Werthmann explained how universal healthcare, an Equal Rights Amendment, and increased taxes were telltale signs of Nazism. Werthmann also warned the audience: Source

In an impromptu news conference with reporters today, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) lashed out at President Obama and the White House, saying that he “resents” the administration “associating” him with “extreme” claims about “the end-of-life situation.” Obama “gave some speeches during August in which he was associating me with efforts to make this a political document and efforts that other people in the country were making to give extremes, like on the end-of-life situation and associating me with things — I [never] used the words he said,” Grassley told the reporters. But as FirstRead points out, Grassley did “lend credence” to the outrageous “death panel” attacks:
And on death panels last month, Grassley did lend credence to the idea that the government would “determine if you’re going to pull the plug on grandma.”

On September 15th, Van Jones addressed his friends and supporters about his recent resignation with the following e-mail message.
Dear Friends:
My family and I want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support that we have received over the past week or so. I resigned from the White House on Sept. 6, and I have remained silent since then–in keeping with my promise not to be a distraction during a key moment in the Obama Presidency.
Over the past several days, however, many people have been asking how they can help and what they can do.
The main thing is this: please do everything you can to support both President Obama and the green jobs movement. Winning real change is ultimately the best response to these kinds of smear campaigns. Source

No matter the Cabinet snub, the barely buried hatchet with Rahm, the humiliating exit from the DNC—Howard Dean is tirelessly evangelizing Obamacare, whether the president wants him to or not.
The doctor’s upper lip is so stiff these days, he might want to write himself a prescription for a muscle relaxant.
Howard Dean—physician turned governor, presidential candidate, and Democratic National Committee chairman—is recovering from an overdose of public humiliation administered by President Barack Obama’s inner circle. Now the Man from Vermont is uncomplainingly soldiering onward in the health-insurance-reform battle—a happy warrior for Obamacare. Source

With polls showing that the war in Afghanistan is becoming increasingly unpopular, members of Congress have begun to express skepticism about the administration’s strategy there. Military officials believe that Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the top US commander in Afghanistan, may ask for as many as 20,000 additional troops. ABC News reports today that Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI) has called on President Obama to announce a timetable for withdrawal from Afghanistan:
Sen. Russ Feingold, D-WI, called on President Obama to announce a timetable for withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan. “This is a strategy that is not likely to succeed,” Sen. Feingold said about the troop buildup in Afghanistan. [...]
“I think it is time we start discussing a flexible timetable so that people around the world can see when we are going to bring our troops out,” said Feingold. “Showing the people there and here that we have a sense about when it is time to leave is one of the best things we can do,” he added.

Senate Democrats contemplating a controversial parliamentary maneuver that would allow them to pass key provisions of a health care bill with just 51 votes are exploring an option that would not require the bill to be split into two.
Should Democrats use the procedure known as reconciliation, the assumption has been that certain elements would have to be stripped out of the bill and passed separately, because a Senate rule known as the Byrd Rule only allows reconciliation for legislation that costs or raises substantial amounts of money. That would include the expansion of Medicare or Medicaid, revenue-raising tax provisions, and even the creation of a public health insurance option, depending on how it’s written. But non-budget-related items — most of the new insurance industry regulations, for instance — would presumably be put in a separate bill that would go through regular order — and would therefore need 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. It’s fashionable in media circles right now to treat the “public option” as nothing more than the political football du jour, to discuss it only in the context of vote counts and political strategizing, to write it off as a particularly hysterical obsession of the political “left”, and — oh, yes — to declare it dead.
But the fate of the public option is not yet sealed. And it’s much more than just a bargaining chip. The concept of offering health care consumers a government-run alternative to the rogues that comprise the modern American insurance industry not only has a powerful appeal to the general populace, it’s central to effective health care reform, both symbolically and concretely. President Barack Obama guaranteed on Thursday that health care reform will be achieved, and he stuck by the public option as his preferred choice for revamping the insurance market.
In an interview with Philadelphia-based radio talk show host and MSNBC analyst Michael Smerconish, Obama continued to talk about his desire to bring Republican lawmakers on board. He also chastised, ever so slightly, the press and progressives for getting “a little excited” in their suspicions that he was abandoning the public plan. “Our position hasn’t changed,” he said.
